Melchizedek is only mentioned three times in the Bible and seems to be a mystery, until you study the life of Shem, the most honored son of Noah. And the fact that Abraham descended from Shem.

Genesis 14:18-19

Then Melchizedek king of Salem brought our bread and wine, He was priest of God Most High, and he blessed Abram, saying "Blessed be Abram by God Most High, Creator of heaven and earth. (NIV)

Psalm 110:1-4

The Lord says to my lord:

If perfection could have been attained through the Levitical priesthood-and indeed the law given to the people established that priesthood-why was there still need for another priest to come, one in the order of Melchizedek, not in the order of Aaron? (NIV)

God made a compromise between Shem and Abraham, The Holy city, Abraham called "Jireh" and Shem had called "Salem." God united both names; and renamed it "Jerusalem".
