Interesting facts about polar bears

The Arctic is home to polar bears.

The Arctic Ocean's pack ice is their favored environment.

The ideal hunting grounds are the ice edge and pressure ridges where fractures and refreezing occur.

As the ice melts and freezes, bears will migrate up to 1,000 kilometers (620 miles) north and south.

Polar bears must migrate onshore in the summer in regions where the sea ice has entirely melted. They can either forage to prevent starvation or fast until the ice develops again. These bears have learned to consume rubbish dumps in some areas.

In the wild, polar bears usually live for 15 to 18 years. In the Arctic, the oldest known polar bear lived for 32 years.

The world's oldest polar bear, abandoned as a youngster and nurtured in captivity in the freezing Russian north, has died at the age of 42.

Polar bears are the largest terrestrial carnivore in the planet.

Polar bears are around 2.5 to 3 m (8.2 to 9.8 ft) long and weigh between 350 and 650 kg (770 to 1,435 lb).

Female polar bears are around 1.8 to 2.5 m (6 to 8.2 foot) long and weigh 150 to 250 kg (330 to 550 lb). Females who are pregnant can weigh up to 500 kg (1,100 lb).

Polar bears have a short tail and a stocky build, with a long neck, tiny head, short, rounded ears, and a short tail.

Polar bears' fur seems white to the naked eye, but it is actually translucent. It only appears white because visible light reflects off of it. Polar bear skin is truly black beneath their fur. A layer of insulating fat lies beneath the skin.

They have 42 razor-sharp teeth in their mouth.

The sense of smell in polar bears is exceptional. They can detect their prey from a distance of 32 kilometers (20 miles), and they can smell a seal's breathing hole on the ice from a distance of over 800 meters (0.5 mile).

Polar bears are solitary and carnivorous, preying primarily on ringed seals, but sometimes on bearded seals and other pinnipeds. They also eat beluga whales, walruses, narwhals, and bowhead whales' carcasses. Polar bears have been known to kill beluga whales and baby walruses.

If a polar bear does not eat for seven to ten days, its metabolism will stall until it finds food.

They enjoy keeping themselves tidy. Polar bears frequently wash after feeding by going for a swim or rolling in the snow.

The hairy soles of the broad feet, as well as the little bumps on the soles of the feet (called papillae), protect and insulate the feet while also facilitating mobility through ice.

Claws that are strong and sharp are also necessary for getting traction, digging through ice, and killing prey.

Polar bears, which are built to stay warm in their freezing environment, occasionally overheat and must cool off in the icy water.

Polar bears can swim very well. They can swim at a comfortable speed of 10 kilometers per hour (6 miles per hour). They have the ability to swim for up to 160 kilometers (100 miles).

Polar bears have excellent underwater vision, identifying probable food from a distance of 4.5 meters (15 feet). They have a nictitating membrane, or third eyelid, that lets them to see underwater while also protecting their eyes from snow.

On land, polar bears may attain speeds of up to 40 kilometers per hour (25 miles per hour).

Polar bears sleep for up to 20 hours a day when they are not hunting.

Polar bears, unlike brown and black bears, do not hibernate, and only pregnant females spend the winter in dens.

Female polar bears prefer to make their dens out of "old snow" from prior years rather than new snow.

In April and May, when polar bears cluster in the prime seal hunting locations, mating takes place on the sea ice. The gestation period lasts between 195 and 265 days.

Polar bear pups (one to four, usually two) are born in a den from November to January. In late March or early April, the mother and her cubs emerge from their den.

Female poplar bears nurse their cubs for an average of two and a half years.

While their mother hunts, polar bear pups learn to freeze and remain motionless. If they move, the mother disciplines them with a head beat.

Because polar bears have no natural predators and have no fear of humans, they are a very dangerous species.

Scientists believe that there are between 22,000 and 31,000 polar bears left in the world today.

The effects of global warming and pollution, rather than hunting, are the greatest threat to polar bears today.

The polar bear is considered a vulnerable species because of predicted habitat loss due to climate change.

Despite the fact that the majority of polar bears are born on land, they spend the most of their time on the sea ice. Ursus maritimus, which means "maritime bear" in Latin, is derived from this fact.

Of the eight bear species, the polar bear is the newest.

All living polar bears can be traced back to a single female brown bear who lived in Ireland between 20,000 and 50,000 years ago.

Residents in Churchill, Canada, leave their automobiles open to provide a safe haven for walkers who may come face to face with polar bears.

You will die if you consume the liver of a polar bear. That much vitamin A is too much for humans to handle.

It was a polar bear.
